palestine_displasedIn September 2011, the month that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud ‘Abbas submitted Palestine’s statehood bid at the United Nations, Qusai Abdul-Raouf of the Lebanon-based Palestinian Human Rights Foundation was undertaking the task of documenting the increasing number of attacks against Palestinians in the Al Baladiyyat neighbourhood of Baghdad. As he toured the neighborhood three gunmen, reportedly wearing Interior Ministry uniforms, abducted him. No one has seen him since.

 

AdvertisingIn the West Bank's streets, there are many advertisement banners, but none of them reflect real life in the cities of the West Bank. One of the advertisement banners that was put at the entrance of al-Azeh refugee camp in Bethlehem for example shows two girls sitting in the cinema and eating popcorn, though the reality is that in Palestinian governorates and in Bethlehem in particular, there aren't any cinemas.

On the basis of an invitation from BADIL, on 4th February the Special Rapporteur on adequate housing as a component of the right to an adequate standard of living, and on the right to non-discrimination in this context, Mrs. Raquel Rolnik, visited Aida Refugee Camp, Bethlehem.

south_africa_2012From February 1-10, 2012 Badil and Zochrot undertook an intensive study visit to Cape Town, South Africa. The visit was carried out as part of a broader joint project of examining the practicalities of the implementation of the right of return of the Palestinian refugees and internally displaced. The participants’ program in Cape Town began with a service held by Archbishop Desmond Tutu in the Cape Town Cathedral in which the Archbishop shared his thoughts on Zionism and racism from the perspective of post-Apartheid South Africa. The visit ended with a two-day workshop in which participants developed ideas on a vision for the return of displaced Palestinians.

Japan_Food_AidThe Government of Japan has donated USD 10 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) to provide funding for 10 health clinics in Gaza in 2012. The agreement was signed at a ceremony in Amman today by Mr. Filippo Grandi, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, and Mr. Junichi Kosuge, Ambassador of Japan to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

Norway_donationThe Norwegian ambassador to Lebanon announced Wednesday a $2 million donation toward the reconstruction of the Nahr al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp, a contribution that pushes total funds to nearly half the amount needed to complete the rebuild.
