A harsh siege followed by a deadly war has destroyed the lives of people there. PRC calls for a prompt intervention to ease the refugees' conditions in Gaza until long term solution is implemented.

UNRWAThe UN agency for Palestinian refugees said on Wednesday it was facing an "unprecedented" budget deficit that could force it to cut back on services to more than 4.7 million people.

picThe United Nation Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) called for opening Karni commercial crossing east of Gaza city and lifting the siege imposed on the coastal enclave.During an interview with the UN Radio, UNRWA spokesperson Chris Gunness Tuesday said that the current situation in Gaza Strip is a blatant violation of international law and must be ended immediately.

"The Israeli blockade on the strip, he said, means preventing the entry of any reconstruction material, although 60,000 Palestinian houses were completely destroyed or badly damaged by the Israeli war on Gaza.

"Therefore, the UN agency tasked with helping Palestinian refugees demands and repeats its calls for lifting the unjust blockade", he added.

Gunness pointed out that the problem in the coastal enclave is not the lack of sufficient funds to repair the damage caused by the war, but in the absence of international political will to lift the siege.

Although the international community occasionally protests Gaza's ongoing tragedy, no real pressure has been put on Israel to end its stranglehold on the enclave, he added.

The international community was working through Karni crossing, and the Israeli security concerns were the main reason for adopting the policy of closure, the relief official said.

AMMAN, Jan 26 (NNN-PETRA) - Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh has reiterated the Kingdom's rejection of any reduction in services provided by UNRWA to a large number of Palestinian refugees in the Kingdom.

The minister, who spoke during a meeting Monday with the newly-appointed UNRWA Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi, added that any curtailment to the UNRWA allocations for its operations in the Kingdom and other host countries would bring about further financial burden on these countries.

Judeh stressed the key role of the international agency in serving Palestinian refugees until their case is resolved in line with related international resolutions.

UN chief Ban Ki-moon last week appointed Filippo Grandi of Italy to lead the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA), succeeding Karen AbuZayd of the United States whose tour of duty came to an end last month.
